Week 11-Report about using microsoft Excel

To me, the Microsoft Excel is a convienient tool not only for calculation but for statistic. "Use Cell Styles and Table Styles galleries to quickly format your spreadsheet the way you want. Tables include AutoFilters while column headers stay in view when you scroll through the data. AutoFilters populate and expand any table automatically. Formulas authoring experience includes a resizable formula bar and context-based Formula AutoComplete — so that you can write the proper formula syntax the first time, every time. You can also refer to named ranges and tables within formulas and functions. Create professional-looking charts with dramatic visual effects in just a few clicks. Use predefined Chart Layouts and Chart Styles, or manually format each component, such as axes, titles, and other chart labels. You can use stunning effects such as 3-D, soft shadowing, and anti-aliasing to help identify key data trends and create more compelling graphical summaries. Use Page Layout View to see exactly how your spreadsheet will print and add or edit headers and footers. Adjust page margins with direct visual feedback where the page will truncate and avoid multiple printing attempts".

Week 10 task-report for microsoft ware

To myself, using Microsoft Word is quite frequent. I really find that this software works definitely systematical and intelligent. By that I mean, it does help me a lot on correcting my spelling as well as grammar mistakes, meanwhile, a means of grasping different typing styles will be considerably helpful. But on the other hand, the system is not always steady. For example, in version 2003, while I am looking up unknowing words by the searching engine subordinated inside, it seems easy to shut down the programme sometimes due to internal errors which are reported by the system.

New communication technology-essay

The two sides of the internet

The history of the internet generally began with ARPANET in the 1960s. The creation of the internet must be one of the greatest inventions throughout humanity’s developmental history. “Without a doubt, the net has had a profound effect on almost every aspect of our lives. The formation of the Internet has changed the way we do business, our communication, our entertainment and education”( History & Development of the Internet Introduction 2007). When you talk about the internet with people, they may mostly talk about how wonderful it is to be able to download movies or music and be preoccupied with other sources of entertainment on the internet, including the convenience of using MSN to talk and see friends and how search engines have made finding answers to questions so simple. However, we also need to know the disadvantages of the internet. In this essay, I will compare the advantages and disadvantages of the internet and current developments.

Amongst the many opportunities or facilities that the internet offers are: email and chat communication (MSN), e-business (online mail order services, venue bookings and online banking services) and information resources (search engines). I shall compare the advantages and disadvantages of some of those facilities to present both positive and negative influences that the internet has brought to human lives.

First and foremost, the internet makes human’s daily life faster and more convenient by providing online services like e-mail. E-mail replaced the role of tradition letters. It is faster than original letter writing and it can be received immediately after sending. As a result of immediacy and no distance limitation, e-mail became a powerful business communications tool that can save time, energy and money (E-Mail 2007). It can be an effective way to communicate with individuals or groups of people and even the global business community. Further more, e-mail can send not only the words but also video and electronic greeting cards that people can share instantly with friends without having to make physical contact. However a negative side to email communication is worms and viruses that are contained in junk mail and cause damage to computers systems (Using Email Effectively). A virus infected email can often be very difficult to detect. Additionally, almost every email that you send has to go through a number of computers before it reaches its destination, thus some people could hack into your email and read it (Advantages and Disadvantages of Email 2007)

Another convenient function of the internet is the large number of resources that people either need or desire. To use search engine facilities is the quickest and most useful way to do internet research. According to Riley and Veale 1999, there are many famous search engines, for instance, LYCOS (www.lycos.com.uk), which currently holds information - about 5 million pages; and Excite (www.excite.com) and Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) are among the famous ones. “Just simply type the words or string words that you wish to find information about and click the search button and the search engine returns with relevant hypertext links in a matter of seconds” (Riley and Veale 1999, pp.37-46). However, according to the research of Crespo (2004, p.360), information returned by search engines is generally accepted without critical appraisal. Thus information without academic appraisal may cause serious problems, especially for those who search information for health or even medicine science treatment. Moreover, because everything is available on the internet, everyone can get online and go though different websites. For instance, children who can not accurately evaluate information may be negatively influenced by accessing unhealthy or inappropriate websites. Reuters recently reported in 19 April 2007, the reasons for Chinese young people guilty of cheating, rape or robbery are given to using the Internet or have been corrupted by online filth. Almost 80 percent of them have been seduced by the Internet (China official blames Internet for youth crime 2006).

Due to the internet, people from different cultural backgrounds around the world can communicate better than ever before. This has been the cause of the development of a new global culture in a new global village. “The internet has potential to tear down geographic boundaries and blur the distinctions between what has been thought of as tradition cultures” (Biggs 2000, p.28). There are many interesting tools that help you to see and know the world better, for example “Google Earth” (www.googleearth.com). Research in this area of world communication has shown that the internet has had a profound affect however one has to ask whether it has impacted negatively on traditional cultures where aspects of traditional language and culture have been lost to technology. Information in this area is minimal and difficult to access and not widely written about.

To conclude, the internet has brought with it many desirable facilities, however if the internet if not used with the right intention, or with the intention to harm the effects can be serious and costly. New technology is constantly being mass developed, bringing with it new opportunities and also some challenges. As with most inventions and discoveries, when put to constructive use for the betterment of humanity, these inventions are indispensable. Similarly, when used for pure personal gain unethically and at the cost of the interest of others or humanity as a whole, these valuable sources or ‘tools’ can cause devastating harm.

Week 8: Cybertherapy-3D world

Is the definition of games nowadays still like many friends come face to face together and play some ball games or knowledge competition? Yes, we still have those kinds of games. However, depends on the development of the technology, people in recent years can just sit in the chair, and play games with friends on the internet by using their fingers. The significant development of computer hardware made 3D games became a way of life.

3D means three-dimensional. It is a three-dimensional medium, display, or performance, especially a cinematic or graphic medium in three dimension. Thus, 3D brought a lot of benefit for the entertainment industry. There are many 3D chat rooms on the internet. For example, the IMVU 3D chatting room. IMVU makes the world's best 3D instant messenger, which is now in beta testing with more than 1 million customers around the world. The service lets users express themselves by creating and customizing a 3D avatar with a wide variety of clothes, accessories, pets, and scenes. Imagine chatting with friends using IMVU, dressed up as your favorite movie star, singer, or sport hero, or wearing your favorite brand-name clothes or accessories. IMVU invites celebrities and corporations with brand-name products to extend their popularity and franchises to IM.

But nowadays 3D chatting room haven't fully developed, for some reasons below I prefer using MSN.

1. I can type many instant messages.

2. Having fun with other chatters by the fuction of video conversation. I can hear their laughter and voice that makes me so happy.

3. I am able to express myself mood with winks, emotions, and my own personal display images. Sometimes they look so funny.

4. In some special cases, the programme support a computer - mobile message function.

5. My e-mail box can be directly linked from the surface of the chat window.

6. More importantly, there are lots of resourceful items supplied such as game zone, weather report, stock graph, current events, and so on.

Part 2:

What is a search engine?

Generously speaking a search engine is a software program that when you type into your key words or a question into the reach engine website then you can get a lot of information about you question. You can find some profesional answer, or you may just find some presonal opinion.

How do search engines rank the stuff they find on the internet?

A combination of relevant page titles and body copy can influence site ranking. The searcher types a query into a search engine.
Search engine software quickly sorts through literally millions of pages in its database to find matches to this query. A software robot, called a spider or crawler, automatically fetches sites all over the Web, reading pages and following associated links. By design, a spider will return to a site periodically to check for new pages and changes to existing pages.
The search engine's results are ranked in order of relevancy.

who, or what, makes one page (that you might get in your search results) more useful than another one, so that it is put at the top of your search results?

Sorry, I didn't find the profesional answer for this question. However, from my own experience that it is not who or what makes one page more useful than another one. The top result depend on the title or the key words you typed into the engine. The title of the first result have some words were highlighted, and the order of those highlighted words is the same order as your title. Further more, the first result has more same words that you mentioned in your title. The content of the the top five results usually have more information that you need.

what are some of your favourite search engines? why do you like one more than others?

My favourite search engine called "Baidu" which is a Chinese search engine. I like it because it has more interesting information that I need. Although google and yahoo has Chinese search engine as well, but baidu was created by Chinese, that means this engine can satisfied people very well, because of the same culture background.

Can you find some current news stories about search engines? (for example, Google has been in the technology news a bit lately).

Ask.com:In 2006, it became the 4th largest search engine in the world.

The part of human's life-----computer!!!!!

Everyone knows that computer plays a very important role of human's life. Computer almost covered all te areas. We use computer to count, to talk, to write, to manage a factory...

Technology develops when human beings want to make convenience and advantage for their life. The computer history begin with the countting. During the accient time Chinese were becoming very involved in commerce with the Japanese, Indian, and Koreans. they needed a way to accounts and bills, thus the first account tool was born - the abacus. The second step of moving computational technology along was the invention of simple mechanical scale for weighing and measuring. In the 17th century, John Napier, Baron of Merchiston, Scotland, invened logrithms which was a big advances in computation. In te same centure, German mathematician Wilhel Schickard built one of the first mechanical calculator which use the system of cogs and gears. Duing the 19th century, the mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage first worked out a device to undertake mechanical calculus, which noticed as the different engine. After the convergence of the development of calculation, and the need of the war, Alan Turing and some mathematicians and cryptographers the devised the first working computer which was used to break secret German 'Enigma' codes.
After the Second World War, computer had a significant improvement in USA. I n 1950s, IBM first produced the commercial computer. The first generation computers were large and expensive machines for military, government. But in 1965, they were quickly became apparent that computers would get smaller, quicker and less expensive at an exponential rate. Xerox PARC developed concepts such as the mouse, the graphical user interface (GUI) and pull-down menus that made the personal computers of today possible and approachable by the general user. Afterwards computor moved out of the laboratories and military and be used widely in he office, home and classroom. Microsoft of Bill Gates is the most famouse development of computer that made a lot of covenience to the world.
Nowadays, it is very hard for people to work or study without computor. It is very necessary for us to think about whether computers will control us in the future.

New beginning!

Hello, everyone!!!

I am Gao Fei, and i come from china. You can call me Fay if you like. Hopefully, I'd like to do something relate to film industry, so I think this course might be a good start.

Today is my second lecture of NEW COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY, but i didn't concentrate on the content. Because i didn't read the reading, so i was wondering during the lecture. Sorry, my teachers!!! I will try my best to enjoy the course afterwards.

I found maybe one of the hobby of my New Communication Technology professor, that is he may be a history lover. In my last semester, once he visited our NEWS AND POLITICS lecture and told us the development of Australian goverment, the history of different party. Today during the lecture he talked many things about media development history. That's great! Because I am a history lover as well.

Although I was wondering this morning, but I still love this course. I can learn the mass communication technology from previous time until now. I think the developments are magics. The speed is so quickly. I wanna know during this semester that why those technology developed so quickly and why we developed them.

GAO fei
